When designer Laura Davidson of Dwellings was hired to style this floor plan and interior design, she had a solid relationship with her”dream customers,” who gave her free reign. The house was designed for three generations: The couple has three grown children and one in middle school, and they desired a apartment for one set of grandparents contained in the design.
The general feel of the house is comfortable, subtly coastal, bright and family-friendly. “I love to weave delicate topics throughout a house,” says Davidson. Let us take a look at how she achieved this.

Davidson had a hand in everything from the design, built-ins, layouts,”right down to the doorknobs,” she states. The built-ins from the living room were designed around the tv, which Davidson believes we should stop trying to hide and only embrace. The stone is a Beuchal stone veneer — actual stone, but lighter and less expensive than full size stones.
Art across the fireplace is Jeff Condon, a local artist.

“I love symmetry,” says Davidson. “I made the house to be somewhat family-friendly and to have a very easy and functional flow.”
The general palette of the home is subtly coastal. “Subtle pops of colour move through the house, and that I tweaked the hues for various flooring to provide them a different texture.”

Transoms over windows and doors are another repeated element, and their decorative is mimicked from the built-ins, like these cabinets that separate the living space from the kitchen.

A subtle seaglass blue onto the island makes it stand out, and the Viking range is the specific same hue. The tiles on the backsplash by Jeffrey Court replicate the sea-glass feel. The counters are Caesarstone, which Davidson chose because”it has that sand feel.”
Toward the end of the kitchen, it is possible to see a transom above a swinging restaurant-style door that leads to the pantry. “All of the doors at the house are painted the same pale gray,” says Davidson. “We saved a few dollars by painting all of the interior doors rather than using solid wood doors, which are considerably more costly”

These saddle seat counter stools emphasize a flat stripe motif that runs across the house. When the original stools Davidson had ordered fell through at the last minute, Michael Thomas Furniture custom made them for her in about a week. This was really fortunate, as 6,000 individuals were scheduled to come through during a Parade of Homes!
The transom-like element is replicated on peak of the cabinets.

The dining chairs are a sea-glass blue hue taken over from the kitchen island, but are covered in a metallic leather, which sets this as a formal area.

The window seat was designed with the customers’ middle schooler in mind. It is a favourite perch, complete with storage underneath. To the best are doors that get the coated portion of the upper deck, and they’re often left open once the family entertains, allowing easy flow from indoors to outside.
“The ceiling has delicate paneling; a V-groove using a crown,” says Davidson. The V-grooved paneling is another subtle motif that repeats throughout the house.

The upper deck is available from several rooms. The in-law apartment has its own private deck area which links to the deck of the main house. The ceiling is a gray/tan blot that coordinates with the front porch, tying the front part of the house to the rear.

The master bedroom on the main floor has a tranquil trendy coastal palette. Davidson also used symmetry to help attain a relaxing and relaxing feel.

Again, Davidson believed the tv in the planning phases; the chair-rail height paneling was set up so the horizontal screen wouldn’t appear to be floating to a large empty wall. A sitting area that includes a settee and chaise provide a relaxing spot in this personal retreat. A rain string beyond the window provides a beautiful noise during inclement weather.

A large, multi-functional laundry room includes this particular island for folding clothes and doing crafts. It also has a drying cupboard, where one can hang clothes to dry warm or slowly visitor’s cold coats on winter (that gets a whole lot of usage during cold Michigan winters). The floors are honed travertine.

Beach glass tiles are interspersed between 4″x16″ brick-shaped tiles in this space. “I love to use different textures,” says Davidson. The cupboard doors are metal mesh, more casual than the cabinets in the kitchen.

Because the owners prefer to amuse in this house so much, there is an extra full-sized fridge and freezer in the laundry room.

These seeded glass doors let the natural light from the laundry room into the hall and are also an interesting architectural element. Around the corner is a landing strip. “I always try to integrate a rear hallway message centre,” explains Davidson. “It’s a wonderful spot to come in, dump the keys and mail and maintain that mess out of the kitchen.”

Moving downstairs, another kitchen solutions the pool and patio area, which is beyond the French doors. “During celebrations, the owners open up the doors to let people flow in and out from the pool area,” Davidson says. They’d 200 people over for a party shortly after the house was finished.

“I wove the very same colors through into the lower level but substituted them with deeper hues for a more casual feel,” says Davidson. Horizontal stripes look again on the carpet and the boards onto the kitchen island.
A more casual trestle dining table by Regina Andrews is created from reclaimed wood. The aluminum chairs from Home Decorators provide a wonderful material contrast, as well as the Dash and Albert carpet brings more of the darker blue. The habit drum pendant is by Stonegate Design.

Woven barstools (by Four Hands) from the kitchen lead a casual beachy feel. The countertops are walnut, and the pendant lighting is by Kichler.

The tv wall built-ins include panels. “Beware of open shelves,” warns Davidson. “They can leave a good deal of empty room for a lot of items. Here, the panels gave us a place to hang art, and they fit the scale of the 9’x15′ wall,” Davidson says. The flat V-groove panels are a subtle detail that reproduces on the base cabinets.

Davidson deliberately left the glass out of the transoms on the lower floor”I just love how casual they’re,” she states. The sectional from Pottery Barn was the one piece at the house the owners gave her to use. Its darker tan hue fits right in with how she tweaked the lower floor’s colour palette.

“This room was my biggest challenge at first,” says Davidson. The teen daughter”knew she wanted white and black, and she knew she wanted Parisian.” The room wound up being a lot of fun. Two mirrors flanking the daughter’s bed (Hobby Lobby finds) reflect the light and silhouette of two chandeliers. The fanciful headboard is by Annie Selke.

Davidson had easy curtains from IKEA hemmed in dark, an easy and affordable customized trick.

The house overlooks a lake south of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The majority of the living room is on the primary floor you see here, and the floor under it. Because the house is sited on a hill that overlooks a pond, the lower floor opens up into the outdoors.
